Making Lunch Count

Have you ever checked the time around 12:30 on a working day and thought to yourself - "No wonder I'm starving" - then put your head down to finish that job - and then discovered it's 3pm, or later, and you still haven't eaten?

If you have you've received a very clear message from your body - and ignored it. This is the pattern that leads to accumulating stress, tension and eventually, exhaustion, illness and death. We ignore the signals from our bodies at our own peril. It's quite obvious really. If you kept ignoring your bodies' need to feed you'd soon be dead.

Every ache, pain and emotion we feel is our own body attempting to communicate. The message is something like: "Hey, stop that behaviour - try something else." It's usually asking us to be a little more gentle with ourselves, a little more loving. Anger is an emotion asking us to see someone else's point of view. Strong desire could be a message saying "Will that really make me happy?"

All these feelings can be confusing. They often seem to arise unbidden and we react to them unconsciously. By meditating we simply listen. We start to get the messages - and the wisdom of our body can be heard over the often dubious ranting of our minds.

So, next time you're hungry, stop and listen. Eat. But don't do it at your desk. There is no job more important than your own health. Take at least 30 minutes for lunch. Eat it out of the office - preferably in a park or restaurant with a quiet, pleasant ambience. Walk there, and make it a decent walk. When you eat, enjoy your food. There's no need to read a report (or even the paper or a magazine). You can switch your mobile off. Eating with a friend can be fun - eating by yourself however, will likely ensure that you don't moan about work on your break!

When you return to work after 30 minutes off undisturbed time out for yourself you'll feel much better. You'll be fresh, clear-headed and productive. Your rejuvenated body and mind will more than adequately compensate for lost time.
